DIGITAL GAME ADDICTION, ITS EFFECTS AND PREVENTION

The important thing is to choose games that are appropriate for age and cognitive capacity! and to be able to balance games with real-life responsibilities.

 

In this century! with the development of technology! people’s gaming tools/equipment and practices have also chang!. While digital games influence many people from seven to seventy; concepts such as digital game addiction have also start! to attract attention. So what should we understand when we say addiction? VandenBos (2015) defines addiction as the state of being psychologically and/or physically dependent on alcohol or other substances. Although it is generally us! synonymously with substance addiction! it also includes behavioral addictions such as sex! internet! and gambling. In this context! what behavioral addiction is comes to the fore. According to DSM 5! behavioral addiction is characteriz! as repetitive behaviors that have characteristics similar to substance addiction but do not occur as a result of any substance use! such as sex! gambling! gaming! and shopping addiction (APA! 2013). Digital game addiction is one of the types of behavioral addiction. Digital game addiction; It is defin! as the obsessive and excessive use of computer and video games in a way that the individual playing the game cannot control! despite the fact that it causes social and emotional problems (Lemmens! Valkenburg! & Peter! 2009).

As can be understood from the definitions above

 

although digital games themselves are not a problem; what is important is to be aware of the factors that cause digital game addiction and eliminate them. Many features of games provide an explanation for their problematic use and even addiction. In this context! becoming aware of and increasing awareness about digital game addiction will also increase individual and social well-being.
